Best Time to Camp at Big Flat Guard Station
The high country here dances between extremes, offering sun-drenched summer days that give way to crisp, star-filled nights that remind you just how far you've climbed above the everyday world. Mountain weather keeps you on your toes—afternoon thunderstorms can roll in without warning, painting dramatic skies and filling the air with the scent of rain on pine. From November through June, deep snow transforms the landscape into a winter wonderland, making summer and early fall the prime seasons for accessing this alpine sanctuary.
June–Oct peak season: sunny days, wildflowers, hiking, biking, horseback riding and open trails.
Fall offers milder weather, aspen color and big game hunting; trails still accessible.
Spring access limited by snow; lingering winter conditions reduce accessibility and activities.
Open year‑round but access is by snowmobile/ski; winter recreation and snow play reported by guests.
Planning Tips
- Peak Season: June 15–October 31. Book 2-3 months ahead.
- Operating Season: Open for reservations June 15–October 31 (accessible by car) and November 1–June 15 (accessible only via snowmobiles, snowshoes, or cross-country skis).
- Current Alerts: Seasonal access restrictions from November to June; vehicles cannot access the site due to snow.
