The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient horses and rhinos once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.

Best season: summer. Summer offers the warmest, most reliable weather (daytime highs commonly 75–95°F, nights in the 40s–50s) and the longest, driest days for exploring the badlands and camping off-grid. This is peak season for backcountry camping, rim-road scenic drives, photography of layered rock colors at sunrise/sunset, and stargazing with minimal light pollution. Motor homes, pull behind trailers, and other recreational vehicles greater than 18 feet in length are prohibited. This limitation does not apply to horse trailers. A portion of the Sage Creek Campground is designated for horse use.Pit toilets and covered picnic tables are available, but not water. Potable water is available at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center.Generators are not permitted.
