Echo Amphitheater sits at 6,621 feet in Carson National Forest, Rio Arriba County. The sandstone formation delivers what its name promises: curved cliff walls that bounce sounds back with surprising clarity. Eight campsites with electric hookups accommodate small to medium RVs, camper vans, and tents. A paved path leads from the parking area to the amphitheater in a few minutes.
The site includes eight developed campsites with electric hookups suitable for small and medium-sized RVs, camper vans, and tents at some sites, plus two double sites and a large group shelter for group use.
Weather and SeasonsBest season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable access, longest daylight, and the fullest expression of the amphitheater’s scenery — expect daytime highs around 70–85°F and cool nights in the mid-40s to low-50s. This is prime hiking and wildlife-viewing season (early mornings and evenings are best) and the monsoon-fed late-summer green-up makes the red sandstone look especially dramatic. Expect moderate crowds on weekends and holidays; visit weekday mornings or evenings for the best acoustics and quieter trails
Peak months: July, June, September
Avoid: December, January, February

Natural Features and SceneryThe amphitheater's cliff walls rise in horizontally bedded sandstone, streaked with vertical bands of mineral varnish where iron and manganese oxides have seeped down the rock face over millennia. The contrast between golden sandstone and dark mineral streaks gives the formation its dramatic color. The curved walls create the acoustic effect: shouts, claps, and instrument notes reflect back clearly enough that visitors can hold conversations with their own echoes. This is classic Colorado Plateau geology, red rock against blue sky.
