Best season: fall. Fall offers the most dramatic scenery at Swan Cabin — crisp, clear days and peak foliage (especially in October) transform the old-growth forest into a riot of color, ideal for photography and hiking. Expect daytime highs roughly 45–60°F and nighttime lows often dropping into the 25–40°F range at 5,341 ft, so layers are essential; cooler temps also mean fewer bugs and excellent wildlife viewing. Trails are at their most comfortable for day hikes into Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and Stratton Bald, and Peak months: October, September, May, June Avoid: November, December, January, February
Fall is the standout season: peak foliage, crisp clear days and excellent hiking/photography.

Swan Cabin offers essential primitive amenities suitable for rustic camping experiences. The cabin includes three rooms on the lower floor and a loft upstairs with nine beds, consisting of bunk frames and single bed frames strung with rope for sleeping bags. A pit toilet is available adjacent to the cabin, along with a fire ring, picnic table, and grill outside. 'Visitors may wish to bring their own drinking water, as well as supplies and equipment for food preparation.' The cabin lacks electricity, running water, and locks on the door, and the wood stove has been removed, so campers are advised to bring their own heat source. There's no potable water source, although a nearby spring may provide untreated water that must be boiled or treated. Visitors must carry all equipment approximately 100 feet from the parking area. No pets are allowed except for service animals.
