No water on-site is a hard stop if you can't haul enough for your whole trip. Summer visits also draw heat, biting flies, and wandering cattle, which reviewers found genuinely unpleasant.

Fall offers the clearest skies, crisp daytime temps, and the best window for quiet wildlife viewing—expect daytime highs roughly 35–60°F (2–15°C) with nights often dropping to 20–35°F (-6–2°C) at 6,000 ft. Hikes are at their most scenic with late-September color and rutting elk activity, while mosquitoes and peak summer crowds decline.
