The campground is a series of overlapping unnamed loops meandering beside the Madison River with some camp sites overlooking the water. Beyond the river is a grass prairie and a magnificent view of the peaks in Yellowstone National Park. Lodgepole pine provide some shade. Wildlife can be observed on or near the river to include heron. Firewood is available for a fee. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. A food storage order is in effect from March 1 through December 1; check fee board for details. Bear boxes for the campers to stow food stuff are located throughout the campground.
Open May 1 through September 15. Yellowstone National Park is a destination point for thousands of vacationers each year. The sights and sounds, geysers and thermal pools, wildlife and scenery all combine to make a wonderful place to visit. But those thousands of visitors also make camping in Yellowstone a far less grand experience. Often, campsites are hard to come by in the Park and are very close together. The authors’ recommendation: use one of the many National Forest campgrounds that are close by. The most “luxurious” in the Gallatin is probably Baker’s Hole, while the most rustic is Eagle’s Nest. Soda Butt and Colter campground, which do not open until July, are the most pristine and are often visited by wildlife. Although camping outside the Park means more driving, any one of the Forest Service campgrounds offers a more pleasant camping experience. Gallatin National Forest 191

Best season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable weather and full access to Bakers Hole and nearby West Yellowstone, with daytime highs typically in the 65–80°F (18–27°C) range and cool nights in the 35–50°F (2–10°C). This is peak season for fishing the Madison River (mayfly and caddis hatches), long daylight for exploring Yellowstone, and easy access to services — though expect higher crowds and weekend traffic so reservations are recommended. Electric sites and full campground services are available during the Peak months: July, August, September, June Avoid: December, January, February
Shoulder season through late Sept with elk activity and fewer bugs; good scenery and cooler temps.
