You want a full-service base camp for exploring the Ozark riverways with hiking, biking, and spring-fed swimming nearby.
You need waterfront sites with direct river access or expect spotless facilities during peak season.
Context for the broader area surrounding Big Spring, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Ozark National Scenic Riverways is the first national park area to protect a river system. The Current and Jacks Fork rivers are two of the finest floating rivers you'll find anywhere. Spring-fed, cold and clear they are a delight to canoe, swim, boat or fish. Besides these two famous rivers, the park is home to hundreds of freshwater springs, caves, trails and historic sites such as Alley Mill.
The Headquarters (Administrative Offices Only/No Visitor Center) for Ozark National Scenic Riverways is located at 404 Watercress Drive in Van Buren, Missouri. It is located at the corner of Watercress Drive and Main Street, across the street from the Van Buren Public School complex. Visitor centers are located at the Big Spring Entrance Station (3 miles south of Van Buren on MO Route 103) and Alley Spring (6 miles west of Eminence on MO Route 106).

Best season: spring. Spring offers the best balance of comfortable weather, peak wildflower displays, and lively river flows — expect daytime highs roughly 55–75°F (mid-40s to mid-50s at night) from March through May. Trails are green and fragrant, fishing for smallmouth and streamside wildlife viewing are at their best, and paddling is enjoyable as flows are often higher after rains. Weekdays are generally quiet while weekends fill up as temperatures warm; note modern restrooms open April 15, so plan accordingly if Peak months: May, April, October, September
Spring green-up, wildflowers and higher flows make paddling and hiking especially good.
