You want a full-service base camp for exploring the Ozark riverways with family-friendly amenities and educational programs.
You need guaranteed electric at every site or prefer secluded camping away from seasonal crowds and neighboring campers.
Context for the broader area surrounding Alley Spring, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Ozark National Scenic Riverways is the first national park area to protect a river system. The Current and Jacks Fork rivers are two of the finest floating rivers you'll find anywhere. Spring-fed, cold and clear they are a delight to canoe, swim, boat or fish. Besides these two famous rivers, the park is home to hundreds of freshwater springs, caves, trails and historic sites such as Alley Mill.
The Headquarters (Administrative Offices Only/No Visitor Center) for Ozark National Scenic Riverways is located at 404 Watercress Drive in Van Buren, Missouri. It is located at the corner of Watercress Drive and Main Street, across the street from the Van Buren Public School complex. Visitor centers are located at the Big Spring Entrance Station (3 miles south of Van Buren on MO Route 103) and Alley Spring (6 miles west of Eminence on MO Route 106).

Best season: fall. Fall brings the clearest skies, comfortable daytime temperatures (typically 50s–70s°F) and the Ozarks’ famous color change — making it ideal for hiking, photography, and paddling the spring-fed rivers. Leaf-peeping peaks in mid-to-late October, while cooler water temps keep crowds lower than summer, though expect busier weekends during prime foliage. Fishing, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives are at their most rewarding, with crisp mornings and moderate daylight for outdoor activities. Peak months: October, May, September, April
Fall cited as best: pleasant temps, peak foliage, clearer skies and fewer crowds.

Water and 50-amp electric hookups are now available; bring a converter if necessary. No sewer hookups are available. A dump station is located at the campground entrance. Water systems shut off Oct. 15-April 14. (Water off means most bathrooms and faucets in campgrounds will be closed and facilities winterized, including picnic pavilions. The exception are the heated shower houses/flush restrooms at Round Spring, Big Spring and Alley Spring campgrounds.
