Fall offers the clearest mix of weather, scenery, and wildlife. Expect crisp, cool days (typically 45–65°F in September and October) and brilliant hardwood color on the bluffs. Migrating raptors and passerines funnel along the Mississippi flyway, making birdwatching and hiking to the Lake Pepin overlooks especially rewarding. Crowds are moderate. Popular weekends see steady visitation, but trails and the group site feel quieter than midsummer. Spring brings warblers and warming weather but more insects. Summer is warm and busy, with full park services at the main campground (the group site remains primitive year-round). Winter use is possible for hardy groups willing to camp with vault toilets, snow, and cold; the park offers snowshoeing and a warm-up shelter.
Fall highlighted as best: crisp days, brilliant hardwood color and migrating raptors.
