Spring offers the best combination of comfortable weather and scenic payoff. Expect daytime highs in the 50s–60s°F (40s early in the season) and cool nights, with wildflowers, fresh green leaves on the hardwood bluffs, and migrating birds along Lake Pepin. Trails are firm and not yet crowded, and bug pressure is moderate compared to summer. Fall rivals spring for conditions, with spectacular color on the river bluffs and valleys drawing crowds on weekends. Summer brings full services and warm weather but also mosquitoes, ticks, and busier loops. Winter use focuses on skiing and snowshoeing; some facilities close seasonally, so call ahead if camping outside the main season.
