Black Lake State Forest Campground-Lower sits on the north shore of Michigan's seventh-largest inland lake, 11 miles south of Onaway in Cheboygan County. The 17-site rustic campground operates first-come, first-served and draws families for its sandy beach, shallow swimming, and direct boat launch access. Sites are large and spread among mixed hardwoods at 728 feet elevation.
Rustic, first-come/first-served campground with tent and trailer-capable sites and no reservation option for the Lower unit.
Weather and SeasonsSummer is the best time to visit for reliably warm weather, swimming, boating, and most consistent lake access. Expect daytime highs in the mid-70s to low-80s with nights in the mid-50s to mid-60s. Water recreation and sandy beach use peak during these months, and fishing, paddling, and biking are easiest with full daylight and calm conditions. Summer weekends fill early due to first-come, first-served status, so arrive by Thursday or Friday morning to secure a lakefront or shaded site.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies rolling forested terrain above Black Lake, a nearly 10,000-acre glacial lake ringed by hardwood forest. Sites sit within steps of a sandy beach and shallow, clear water ideal for wading and launching small watercraft. Mixed oak, maple, and birch provide shade and understory throughout the camping area. Anglers target northern pike and muskellunge along the shoreline and in deeper water offshore. The lake's size creates scenic views across open water to wooded hills on the far shore.
