Anglers and kayakers targeting the Pere Marquette in late September or early October get the best of it: moderate river flows, peak foliage, lighter weekday crowds, and a boat launch at the east end of the site. Bring all your water and toilet paper.
Rain turns the ground to mud fast, the gravel road sees enough local traffic that one reviewer compared it to a NASCAR track, and the vault toilet on the DNR side isn't reliably stocked. Full-hookup or shower-dependent campers have no options here.

There is a short, .25 mile walk from the campsites to the river, through federal and state land. The <a href="http://www.mcgi.state.mi.us/MRBIS/matchlake.asp?lakename=Pere+Marquette">river access</a> is operated by the MI-DNRE. </p><p><a href="https://go.usa.gov/x9h9r" target="external"><strong>Brochure with Map</strong></a>: This brochure is set to print on 11 x 17 paper, landscape (wide) orientation. Fall delivers the best conditions. Daytime highs run mid-40s to mid-60s°F, with crisp nights in the 30s and 40s. Maples and oaks peak late September into October. River flows are moderate, water clarity improves for trout and steelhead, and weekday visits in early October bring the lightest crowds. Spring means wildflowers and higher water. Summer is warm but can get buggy. Winter closes facilities, and roads stay unplowed.

Sulak Campground offers a mix of federal and state land facilities. There are 12 campsites on the USFS side, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. A vault toilet is available on the DNR side. The campground provides access to the Pere Marquette River, which is a short 0.25-mile walk from the campsites. However, potable water and other modern facilities such as showers are not available, making this a rustic camping experience. The campground is free, with sites allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
