You want affordable river access, fall color, and towpath biking or hiking in a national park setting.
You need privacy between sites, quiet nights free of train noise, or alcohol-permitted camping.
Context for the broader area surrounding Mccoy's Ferry Campground, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Preserving America's early transportation history, the C&O Canal began as a dream of passage to Western wealth. Operating for nearly 100 years the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber, and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. Today it endures as a pathway for discovering historical, natural, and recreational treasures.
The park has numerous access points. There is no main entrance. In Washington, DC, the C&O Canal begins in Georgetown on 29th Street NW, south of M Street, and runs alongside Canal Road / Clara Barton Parkway out of DC to the west. The entrance to Great Falls is at Canal Road and MacArthur Blvd in Potomac, MD. Park Headquarters and the Williamsport Visitor Center are located off I-81 at exit 2. Cumberland Visitor Center is off I-68 at exit 43C. See the maps page for more.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the most striking scenery and best overall conditions — daytime highs typically range from the mid-50s to low 70s°F with crisp nights around 30–45°F — producing peak hardwood color that reflects off the Potomac and the C&O Canal. Paddle trips, smallmouth fishing, towpath biking, and ridge-hugging hikes are at their best, and wildlife is very active as animals prepare for winter. Expect higher weekend crowds during peak color (especially late September through October) but quieter mid Peak months: October, September, May, June Avoid: January, February, March
Opens mid-April; towpath, paddling and milder weather make spring a strong season.
