Campers who need hookups, private sites, or real bathrooms at the loop won't find them here. Sites are gravel pads close together with minimal screening, showers are a walk to the fort area, and the rail line runs close enough that earplugs aren't optional for light sleepers.

Fall delivers the best conditions. Daytime highs run 55–70°F through September and early October, dropping as late October arrives, with nights between 35–50°F. October brings peak foliage along the canal and riverbanks, and the towpath is ideal for biking and hiking without summer heat. Weekdays stay quiet; weekends draw more visitors during peak color. Summer means exposed sites under full sun, so bring shade, water, and sunscreen for hot afternoons. The open layout does offer good stargazing and unobstructed sunrise views over the Potomac.
Fall described as best season with pleasant temps and peak foliage along the river corridor.

Basic, mostly primitive campground with gravel pads, picnic tables and fire rings. The camping loop uses portable toilets; flush toilets and outdoor rinse-showers are located near the fort/general store. Drinking water is available in the central/fort area (reported near the railroad tracks) but not at every site. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups in the camping loop.
