Loop OUTR sits under a canopy of live oaks and hardwoods on the banks of the Suwannee River in North Florida, about an hour west of Gainesville. The campground offers 30- and 50-amp electric hookups, water, a dump station, fire rings, picnic tables, and clean restrooms with hot showers. Sites accommodate everything from tents to large RVs, though some spots are tight for rigs over 30 feet.
The campsite near Lake Wauburg accommodates tents, trailers and RVs (RV sites are back-in; tent sites are a short walk from the parking area). The park also offers a primitive group campsite and a primitive campsite along the Chacala Trail (access requires a 1.85-mile approach on foot, horse or bicycle).
Historical Significance
Early 20th-century cattle ranchers dug dikes and canals across parts of what's now the park, remnants of the Camp family's operations. The state later preserved these lands, and interpretive programs discuss the ranching history alongside the river's natural and cultural legacy. Trails cross some of the old ranch infrastructure.Weather and SeasonsNovember through February brings the most comfortable camping: daytime highs in the 60s to low 70s, crisp mornings perfect for a fire, and almost no mosquitoes. Ranger-led campfire programs run on Saturday evenings during this window. Spring and fall offer mild temperatures (mid-60s to mid-80s) with more humidity and bug spray becomes essential. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy. Expect afternoon thunderstorms and aggressive mosquitoes if you visit June through August. Crowds pick up on weekends and holidays in fall, but the campground rarely feels packed.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies a hardwood hammock where live oaks, magnolias, and palmettos create deep shade year-round. The Suwannee River flows just steps away, its tea-colored water stained by tannins from upstream swamps. Trails wind through the hammock into pine flatwoods and along the riverbank, offering views where the Suwannee meets the Withlacoochee River. Baygalls and small ponds dot the landscape, attracting wading birds and turtles. The forest floor stays cool even in summer, with Spanish moss draping the branches overhead.
Scenic ViewsProximity to Lake Wauburg and surrounding wetlands and wooded trails provide lakeside and forested scenery.
