In Altoona, FL, at the intersection of County Rt. 42 and State Rt. 19, take Rt. 19 north 3.1 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign and go 0.2 miles to campground.
Anglers and boaters chasing largemouth bass, crappie, or a day on the water will get the most from this place. The palmetto understory gives each site genuine separation, and the small beach works for a swim before afternoon thunderstorms roll in.
No potable water on site is a hard logistical reality, so bring everything you'll drink and cook with. Hikers will also find nothing here, and the first-come policy means a holiday weekend drive could end without a site.

<p>A massive patch of blue in a sea of green - that's Lake Dorr, one of the prettiest big lakes in the Ocala National Forest. Experience outdoor recreation at either the Lake Dorr Recreation Area - campground or day use - or by renting the cabin for your family or group. Along the northwest shore of the lake, the recreation area is set under the deep shade of an oak hammock. Offering RV camping, we also have a boat ramp and picnic area overlooking the view.</p><ul></ul><p><strong>Camping</strong></p><ul><li>Bring the family out and get back to nature in this picturesque setting. with campsites for tents, campers and RVs. </li><li>Reservations may be made by phone at 1-877-444-6777 or online at <a href="http://www.recreation.gov/camping/lake-dorr-cabin/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=93072">Recreation.gov</a>. </li></ul><p><strong>Boating</strong></p><ul><li>Bring your boat, kayak or canoe and enjoy a day of fishing or exploring. </li></ul><p><strong>Fishing</strong></p><ul><li>Cast for bass in the middle of Lake Dorr or drop a line in from the shore. Bring your boat and get out there.</li></ul><p><strong>Lake Door Cabin</strong></p><ul><li>Set along the south shore of beautiful Lake Dorr, <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/florida/recreation/recarea/?recid=83690">this secluded cabin</a> is ideal for a family getaway. The cabin is situated with two bedrooms (including bunk beds) and a sofa bed, it can sleep up to 10 people. With a private boat ramp, fishing dock and canoes, it's a great destination for small groups that love being on the water.</li></ul>
The elevation is 50 feet. The campground, a nicely groomed large single loop, is situated in Longleaf pine trees and Palmetto palms. The dense middlestory of Palmetto palms and ample spacing gives the campsites excellent privacy. Pedestal grilles and lanterns can be found at each campsite. The nearby Lake Dorr is nice for a little float time in a kaykay or canoe.. This is bear country; practise safe food storage techniques. It is also alligator country; practice caution around water, especially with small dogs.

Summer is the busiest season. Long days and warm lake temperatures make it ideal for swimming, waterskiing, and boating. Daytime highs commonly reach the mid-80s to mid-90s°F with high humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and bring lightning risk, so plan water activities for early morning or late afternoon. Fish are most active during these cooler periods. Holiday weekends fill up, so book ahead.
