Deep Lake Campground, White River National Forest, Eagle Ranger District, Colorado
Trout anglers and people who want genuine solitude on a 37-acre alpine lake for almost nothing. Bring all your water, pack out your trash, and grab supplies in Gypsum 33 miles out before the drive up.
No potable water, no trash service, no cell signal anywhere at camp, and the access road has steep grades and sheer drop-offs that will rattle big rigs and unnerve anyone towing near their limit.

The elevation is 10,600 ft. This campground is a very long way from anything - isolated and remote, but worth the long drive. Located White River National Forest 642 on top of a "flat top" mountain, almost every camp site has a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, canyons and wildflower-covered meadows. The sites are spacious and widely separated. Some sites are located on a ridge overlooking Deep Lake. While not all the camp sites have a grille, every site has a fire ring. Most sites are open with small stands of Subalpine fir scattered around the campground. There is no gas for 35 miles. The campground has a long history: Ute hunting parties camped on Deep Lake's shores in the early 1800s; President Teddy Roosevelt used the same shore for his Flat Tops hunting party in 1905; and, a hotel, built here in 1890 but burned down in 1906, was a resting place for many travelers between Dotsero and Meeker.
Services provided June 21 through October 15 - weather dependent

Summer delivers the most reliable access and comfortable conditions. Expect daytime highs in the mid-50s to upper-60s and nights dropping into the high 30s to low 40s. The lake is fully thawed for fishing and boating. Mid-July through mid-August sees the heaviest use on weekends. Winter brings heavy snowfall that closes the road but attracts a few hardy cold-weather campers. Bug presence can be high during certain stretches of summer.
Summer offers reliable access, milder temps and is highlighted by reviewers as best time to visit.
