Best season: summer. Summer delivers the warmest, most reliable weather for hiking, biking, and exploring the nearby Great Sand Dunes and San Luis Valley (daytime highs commonly 70–86°F / 21–30°C, nights 35–50°F / 2–10°C). Wildflowers and abundant wildlife viewing peak in June–August while long daylight and clear skies make stargazing exceptional; expect afternoon monsoonal thunderstorms some afternoons in July and August. Crowd levels are moderate — busier on holiday weekends but still far quieter than front-range, Peak months: July, August, September, June Avoid: December, January, February, March
Summer offers long days, wildflowers and prime stargazing; afternoons bring storms.

Duncan Cabin offers a unique experience at 8,120 feet above sea level. The cabin is equipped with basic amenities that provide a step above tent camping: two bunk beds (top bunks are single beds while the bottom bunks are fold-out futon couches), a wood stove, a table with chairs, and cooking utensils. Outside the cabin, you'll find a picnic table, a fire pit, and a vault toilet. There is no electricity or running water available at the site, but water can be obtained from the Saguache Ranger District Office during business hours from May to November. As per user reviews, the cabin's cleanliness and equipment are highlights. Kevin F mentions, "The structure itself is a one-room log cabin with all the necessities for a step up from tent camping," while Joshua D notes, "The cabin was clean and very well equipped."
