This small, secluded site offers vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables under a shady canopy with minimal light pollution. Campers use it as a base for hiking the Pepperwood Trail and Sacatone Overlook, biking, and wildlife viewing in the surrounding desert landscape.

Cottonwood Campground contains 25 developed campsites, is open year-round, and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Horses are permitted only in the east loop and no group camping sites are available.

The McCain Valley terrain rises and falls between 3,000 and 4,500 feet, mixing oak woodland with desert washes. After winter rains, wildflowers appear and the washes green up. Trails from camp lead toward Sombrero Peak and Upper Bow Willow Canyon, with the Pepperwood Trail and Sacatone Overlook nearby. Dark skies make for good stargazing when the wind turbines don't bother you.
