The elevation is 7,600 ft. The campground stretches along San Joaquin River where it is cold and clear. There are two loops and a spur with some sites on the river's edge. Camp sites on the opposite side of the campground back up to a bare faced rock wall and have little shade. For all other camp sites Lodgepole pine provide nice shade. Not all camp sites have tent pads. Bear-proof food containers are provided at most camp sites. Day trips (hiking/walks) are available to Devils Postpile National Monument and Ansel Adams Willderness. Limited groceries, a cook's night out, camping supplies, horseback riding, and other activities are available at nearby Reds Meadow Pack Station and Resort. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. "Possessing/storing food so bears/wild animals have access will result in a fine of at least $150."
Open June 8 through September 11 Inyo National Forest 163
The parking aprons are soft and dirt. The interior road is narrow and the parking aprons are irregular in shape. RVs exceeding total length of 40 feet are not recommended. An RV waste station with potable water is available at New Shady Rest campground (Forest Service) in Mammoth Lakes, CA.
