No potable water on-site means hauling everything from Bishop. Summer tent campers in particular get cooked: many sites have no tree cover, and reviewers specifically flag the midday heat as brutal without a shade canopy.

Bitterbrush is a popular campground in spring and fall as it is frequently below the snow line or just has minor amounts of snow. 30 campsites. Bearproof food storage containers available in the campground. Free winter camping November-March

The elevation is 7,350-ft. NOTE: This campground came on line after the author's visit to the Inyo National Forest. All information is provided by the White Mountain Ranger District Office. The campground is one large loop through a stand of Jeffrey and Pinion pines and sagebrush. Near enough to Bishop Creek so that the water can be heard in some campsites, the Creek's riparian border has been preserved and offers a pleasant alternative to the campground's sunny open feel. The campground tends to be less populated with campers and so has a tranquil atmosphere its campers enjoy. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. Bear-proof food storage boxes are provided at campsites. "Possessing/storing food so bears/wild animals have access will result in a fine of at least $150."
Services provided April 23 through October 31

Fall is the sweet spot here. Daytime highs run mid-50s to mid-60s°F, nights drop into the 20s and 30s. The cottonwoods go gold, crowds thin out, and the campground stays accessible through most of October since it sits below the higher snow line. Summer gets hot in the exposed sites, and reviewers suggest bringing portable sunshades if you're visiting then. Winter brings snow and freezing temperatures. Spring sees wildflowers and crisp mornings, but you'll need to check road conditions.
Fall is the 'sweet spot': mild days, golden cottonwoods, thinner crowds and good access.
Water Potable water is not available at this site. Other Amenities No electrical hook ups. Restrooms Vault toilet(s)
