<p>This campground is on Mendenhall Lake, with a view of the Mendenhall Glacier, and is about 13 miles from downtown Juneau. Sites include: 9 full-service RV sites with electricity, water and sewer hook-ups; 9 partial-service RV sites with electricity and water hook-ups; 51 basic-service sites; 7 sites in a separate walk-in backpacker area with covered shelter for cooking; 48 sites that accommodate camping units larger than 30 feet. All of the sites have tent pads, picnic tables and fire grills that meet accessibility standards. Water faucets and vault toilets are dispersed throughout the campground, and two bathhouse units with flush toilets and hot showers. A central dump station is on site. The campground host and garbage dumpster is near entrance. Firewood is rarely provided and it is best to bring your own (no pallets). The elevation is 50 ft. This attractive campground is located below the Mendenhall Glacier, Tongass National Forest 99 providing some campsites with views of this mass of moving ice, Mendenhall Lake and River, or one of the numerous ponds scattered around the campground. Sitka spruce, hemlock, alder and a variety of shrubs provide good to excellent privacy as well as ample shade. The campground has three defined sections offering backpackers, car, tent, and truck campers, along with the RV camper, with an experience geared to their camping style. This may be the only Forest Service campground where campers can actually watch icebergs float by. Spring brings a variety of wildflowers including large showy lupines along with mosquitoes - industrial strength bug repellant recommended. A day trip to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is a must. Another possible day trip is exploring the sights and history of Juneau. And the hiking in the area is noteworthy. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.

There are numerous ponds scattered through-out the campground. Mendenhall River has Class III rapids and recommended for only experienced kayakers.
The parking aprons are paved. The pull-throughs are large and can accomodate any size RV.
NOTE: Access to most campgrounds in the Tongass National Forest is initially by plane or boat. These directions assume access is by ferry, specifically via either the Alaska Marine Highway System or Inter-Island Ferry Authority. For a price, any size RV can be transported by the ferry systems. From the Alaska Marine Hwy ferry terminal in Juneau, turn right onto Glacier Hwy and go 1.6 miles to Mendenhall Loop Rd. sign. Turn left at sign onto Loop Rd. and go 2.4 miles to Montana Creek Rd. sign. Turn left after sign onto Montana Crk Rd. and go 0.7 miles to campground on right.

Best season: summer. Summer offers the clearest, most accessible experience at Mendenhall — long daylight (up to ~18+ hours in June), mild temperatures (generally 50–65°F / 10–18°C), and full facility/boat-launch availability. Hiking to Nugget Falls, kayaking on Mendenhall Lake, guided glacier/boat tours, and abundant wildlife viewing (including coastal and salmon-run activity) are all at their peak. Expect moderate to heavy crowds in July–early August, so reserve a site (campground reservations are open May 15–Sept Peak months: July, August, June, May Avoid: October, November, December, January

Mendenhall Campground provides a wide range of amenities and accommodations designed to cater to various types of campers, including RV travelers, tent campers, and backpackers. There are 69 campsites, 56 of which are fully accessible. Nine are full-service RV sites with electric, water and sewer hookups, and nine are partial-service RV sites with electric and water hookups. Seven sites are designated for walk-to backpackers. All campsites are equipped with picnic tables, tent pads, and combination fire rings with grills. Potable water is available through accessible water faucets. The campground offers accessible vault toilets and two accessible flush toilets, along with shower facilities. Additional facilities such as a dump station, trash dumpsters, and bear-proof containers are provided. User reviews highlight the campground's well-maintained facilities but also note occasional issues such as theft and noisy campers.
