<p>Welcome to Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland! Visitor opportunities abound on almost 2.9 million acres of National Forest System lands.</p> <p>The Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests provide year-round recreation opportunities for you. These activities include hiking, biking, camping, horseriding, OHV riding, fishing and hunting, just to name a few. Beautiful vistas await sightseers and photographers.</p> <p>The topography varies greatly within the national forests. Elevation ranges from 5,500 to 12,940 feet. The climate ranges from semi-arid at low elevations to colder and less arid in the high country. Frost may occur at any time, and visitors to the higher elevations should be prepared for harsh weather, including snow and high winds, even during the summer months.</p> <p>The Thunder Basin National Grassland provides unique opportunities for recreation, including hiking, sightseeing, hunting, and fishing. There are no developed campgrounds; however, dispersed camping is allowed. Elevation on the national grassland ranges from 3,600 to 5,200 feet, and the climate is semi-arid.</p> <p><strong><strong>The following recreation conditions report includes a sampling of our recreation sites. Best season: summer. Summer offers the best combination of reliable access, mild daytime temperatures, and peak outdoor activities — expect sunny mornings with daytime highs commonly between 60–75°F (15–24°C) and cool nights dropping to the 30s–40s°F (0–8°C). Trails, alpine meadows and high-elevation fishing are at their best from mid‑June through September, though afternoon thunderstorms are common so plan activities for mornings and carry storm layers. Crowds are moderate (busier on summer weekends), and the guard Peak months: July, August, September, October Avoid: November, December, January, February

The Jack Creek Guard Station offers a unique lodging setup with historical and rustic charm. It is equipped with two bunk beds accommodating up to four people, a combination wood/propane cook stove, propane lights, basic cooking and eating utensils, as well as a picnic table and campfire ring outside. Water is accessible during summer months from a freeze-proof hydrant outside or a hand pump at Jack Creek Campground located a mile away. However, there is no indoor plumbing; a nearby vault toilet is available. Trash services are not provided as guests are required to pack-in and pack-out their garbage.
