Open-site layout means neighbors are visible across much of camp, which bothers light sleepers and anyone wanting real seclusion. No showers or dump station, Verizon is useless here, and the river current rules out swimming with kids.

Small, remote campgroud surrounded by Ponderosa Pine. Walking and bicycle opportunities. Some sites have maximum lenght of 35 feet. This campground is located along the Chewuch River 15 miles north of Winthrop, Washington.

The elevation is 2,300 ft. The campground has two sections, one for recreation vehicle and one for tent campers, on the west bank of Chewuch River. A young stand of Jeffrey pine provide some shade. The spacious tent sites are closest to the river with sites 6 and 8 enjoying a little sandy beach. Although the river is too fast for swimming, tubing may be possible. Wildflowers and grass provide minimal understory and with no middlestory, privacy is dependent on good separation between campsites. A nice little campground that appears to have not yet been discovered. This is bear country; practise safe food storage techniques.
Open mid-May through October 31.
The parking aprons are gravel and all are about same size.
In Winthrop, WA, at intersection of State Rt. 20 with Pearrygin Lake State Park sign (no street sign), follow sign to park. Continue straight, passing the state park and go 15 miles to campground on right.
Compare with similar sites, watch availability, and build a packing list — Camp Sage handles all of it.
Fall's the sweet spot here. September through the October 31 closure brings mild days around 50-70°F, cool nights dipping into the 30s-40s, and far fewer people after Labor Day. Fish get active, trail traffic drops, and the cottonwoods put on a show. The campground opens mid-May, so spring can still throw snow or temperature swings. Summer's comfortable for river wading and evening stargazing, though you'll share the place with more visitors. Always pack layers. Mountain weather shifts fast.
Explicitly noted: 'Fall's the sweet spot'—mild days, cool nights, fewer people and active fishing.
The Chewuch Campground offers basic amenities including restrooms, potable water from three spigots, picnic tables, and fire grilles at each of its 16 sites. Reviews from users mention that the vault toilets are clean and well-maintained. Trash receptacles are also available on-site. However, there is no dump station or hot showers. Cell phone reception is limited, with one user noting that Verizon is non-functional but AT&T works to some extent. Firewood availability, Wi-Fi, and other modern conveniences are not provided.
