Context for the broader area surrounding Bird Island Basin Campground, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Protecting sixty-six miles of wild coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, the narrow barrier island is home to one of the last intact coastal prairie habitats in the United States. Along the hypersaline Laguna Madre, unique tidal mud flats teem with life. Native Americans, Spanish explorers and cattle ranchers have walked along its shores. Padre Island National Seashore is waiting to be rediscovered.
The National Seashore is located on North Padre Island, southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas. Visitors to the area should head east through Corpus Christi on Highway 358. After crossing the JFK Causeway onto Padre Island, Highway 358 changes to Park Road 22. Continue about 10 miles south on Park Road 22 to reach the park entrance.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of mild temperatures (typically 60–80°F / 15–27°C), steady coastal breezes for windsurfing and kite activities, and excellent fishing as summer-warmed waters remain productive. Bird migration activity is still strong into early fall and the summer crowds and peak heat have eased, so you can enjoy quieter campsites and easier shoreline access. Risk from tropical storms drops after September, making October and November especially reliable for outdoor recreation. Peak months: October, November, April, May Avoid: September
Fall described as the "sweet spot": 60–80°F, steady breezes and peak bird migration.
The Bird Island Basin Campground at Padre Island National Seashore offers basic facilities primarily catering to RV and tent campers. It features 35 RV/tent sites and 10 additional tent-only sites.
