The campground is temporarily closed right now, so anyone planning a trip should call the Malheur National Forest at (541) 575-3000 before making the drive from Prairie City, which is 36 miles on forest roads.

<p>This rustic camp offers a few sites and is also a trailhead which accesses the <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/malheur/recarea/?recid=39908">Vinegar Hill-Indian Rock Scenic Area</a>. From the trailhead visitors can access other trails such as the <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/malheur/recarea/?recid=40004">Princess trail #251</a>, <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/malheur/recarea/?recid=40012">Sunrise Butte Trail #255</a> and <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/malheur/recarea/?recid=39916">Blackeye Trail #243</a>. Allowing for multiple opportunities for hiking. </p>

Summer delivers the most reliable conditions, with daytime highs in the mid-60s to upper-70s°F and nights dropping into the 30s and 40s°F. Afternoon thunderstorms develop regularly during the warmer months, so plan hikes for mornings. Snow can linger into late spring and return early in fall at this elevation. The trailheads see lighter use than lower-elevation Oregon destinations, though weekends bring more visitors.
