Smokey Boulder Road #074
OHV riders, hunters, and self-sufficient tent campers who bring all their own water will find this ideal in September and October, when the aspens go gold and the forest opens up around the road corridor.
No potable water on-site is a hard stop for anyone who doesn't pack in every drop. Add that the nearest ranger station is temporarily closed, and this is a bad fit if you're not comfortable handling problems on your own.

Fall is the sweet spot. September and October bring daytime temps in the 40s–60s°F, nights near or below freezing, and stable conditions for hiking or dispersed camping before snow arrives. Hunters use the area then, so you won't be alone. Winter dumps snow and makes the road impassable for standard vehicles. Spring is muddy and unpredictable. Summer warms up but stays pleasant at this elevation, though you'll share the forest with more visitors. Cell service is a question mark.
Fall is called the 'sweet spot' (Sept–Oct); stable conditions before snow and peak use.
