Woodland Valley Campground sits at the base of Slide Mountain, the Catskills' 4,180-foot high point, about 15 minutes from Phoenicia. The campground has 72 sites for tents and RVs, many close to Woodland Valley Stream. Open July 1 through Labor Day, it costs $20 per night. Sites fill quickly on summer weekends because the trailheads for Slide, Cornell, Panther, and Wittenberg are all nearby.
Woodland Valley Campground caters to traditional tent camping and trailer camping, with options for group sites. All camping is relatively primitive, without modern hookups for RVs.
Weather and SeasonsThe campground is only open in summer, when valley temperatures usually range from the mid-60s to mid-70s during the day. Afternoon thunderstorms and mountain mists are common. Streams stay full enough for fishing through the season. Wildflowers bloom on the mountain slopes and the leaf canopy is thick. Popular trailheads get crowded, especially on weekends, so book early. Nights cool off noticeably even in July and August.
ElevationTucked into the protective embrace of the surrounding mountains, the campground offers a unique valley floor experience where campers can feel the dramatic rise of the peaks around them without the challenges of high-altitude camping.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies a valley floor at 1,427 feet, surrounded by hardwood and evergreen forest. Woodland Valley Stream runs through the property, clear enough to see native trout. Several sites sit directly along the creek. The dramatic slopes of Slide Mountain loom overhead, and morning mist often settles in the valley. Black bears are active in the area. The landscape is classic Catskill terrain: steep ridges carved from ancient sedimentary rock, dense tree cover, and small streams cutting through the forest.
Geological RegionWoodland Valley Campground occupies a privileged position in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, cradled at the base of Slide Mountain—the range's 4,180-foot crown jewel. This remarkable location places you within striking distance of the legendary 'Catskill High Peaks,' including the formidable quartet of Slide, Panther, Cornell, and Wittenberg mountains. The surrounding landscape showcases millions of years of geological artistry, where ancient sedimentary rocks have been carved by time and water into the dramatic ridges and valleys that define this biodiversity hotspot. Dense forests cloak these peaks in emerald green, harboring everything from black bears to rare alpine plants, making every hike a journey through one of the Northeast's most ecologically rich regions.
