Capilla Peak Campground sits at 9,200 feet in the Manzano Mountains with eight tent sites and 360-degree views across two valleys. The campground is a base for the nearby Hawkwatch raptor counting station, where observers track migrating birds of prey each fall. Sites cost $10-$45 per night and are reasonably spaced for privacy.
Capilla Peak Campground is primarily designed for tent camping, with options for group picnicking. It is not suitable for large RVs or trailers due to the narrow and challenging access road.
Historical Significance
A wildfire swept through the area fourteen years ago, burning much of the forest and destroying five of eight picnic pavilions that once stood at the sites. The remaining structures survive as reminders of that event. New vegetation has grown back since, and the fire opened up additional viewpoints across the landscape.Weather and SeasonsFall brings the best conditions: daytime temperatures between 50 and 70°F, nights dropping to 20-40°F, and clear skies for stargazing. This is also when aspens peak and raptor migration fills the skies from late September through October. Crowds thin compared to midsummer, though weekend spots still fill during prime fall dates. Summer offers warm hiking weather. Winter can bring snow to this elevation, creating a quiet but cold campground experience.
ElevationAt 9,000 feet above sea level, Capilla Peak delivers that crisp mountain air that makes every breath feel like a gift. This lofty perch puts you above the heat of the valleys below while keeping you close enough to the treeline for shelter and shade. The altitude adds an extra dimension to your camping experience—cooler nights perfect for campfires, brilliantly clear days, and that satisfying feeling of being on top of the world.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies a high ridge between the Rio Grande Valley to the west and the Estancia Valley to the east. From this elevation, views stretch across both basins to distant mountain ranges including the Sandias. The Manzano range itself is a geologic uplift, an island between valleys where erosion has carved ridgelines and canyons over a million years. Aspen groves turn gold in fall, and the open terrain after past wildfires has expanded sight lines across the wilderness.
Geological RegionNestled within the magnificent Manzano Mountain Wilderness of the Cibola National Forest, Capilla Peak sits at the crossroads of New Mexico's most dramatic landscapes. This ancient mountain range rises like an island between two vast valleys—the Rio Grande to the west and the Estancia to the east. The geology here tells a million-year story of uplift and erosion, creating the dramatic ridgelines and deep canyons that make this wilderness area a geological wonderland worth exploring.
