Fall delivers the most consistent experience. Expect daytime highs around 50-65°F and nights in the 30s-40s, with peak color late September through mid-October. Hiking the boulder fields and paddling the calm lake hit their scenic peak then, and bass and trout feed actively before winter. Weekdays stay quiet. Peak leaf-peeping weekends draw heavier crowds. Summer brings warm swimming weather but also noise complaints during busy weekends and holiday stretches. Spring and winter see far fewer visitors.

Pawtuckaway State Park Campground provides a blend of natural and recreational amenities. All campsites are wooded, some offering views of the lake, each with a fireplace, picnic table, tent area, and parking spot. Amenities include running water, flush toilets, free coin-operated showers, a camp store, a boat launch, and canoe and paddleboat rentals. Accessibility features include handicap access and restrooms. However, there are no hookups or dump stations for RVs, and cell phone reception is limited to none. Firewood is recommended to be purchased on-site to reduce risks of bringing exotic pests.
