Paddlers and wildlife watchers who want real seclusion at a low price. Hike-in sites start at $15, trails leave directly from camp, and the tea-colored channels through the cypress are legitimately impressive. June brings fireflies by the thousands.
Light sleepers should know the dumpster truck arrives around 3 AM, and Highway 158 pushes road noise into some sites. No electric hookups and no swimming area either, so RV campers needing power and families expecting a swim beach will be disappointed.

Summer delivers the best swamp experience. Highs reach the mid-80s to low-90s°F, nights settle into the mid-60s to mid-70s. Long days mean more time on the water. Calm conditions and full leaf cover make kayaking and wildlife viewing ideal. The humidity is present but reportedly manageable, and mosquitoes are less oppressive than you'd expect in a swamp. Weekend crowds are moderate. Visitor center hours extend through summer, which matters because you'll need to buy firewood there. It's not sold at the campground itself.
