No showers, no hookups, and spring flooding near the river are the reality here. Car campers expecting developed amenities, or anyone planning a late-May visit when snowmelt runs high and mosquitoes are at their worst, will want a different site.
Official information for Scheck's Place Trail Camp from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
This sunny, open-group campground is surrounded by tall oaks and pines. It is home to a group area designed for use by equestrian campers riding the Shore-to-Shore Trail , a 420-mile trail system open to hiking and horseback riding, that stretches east-west from Empire to Oscoda with two additional northern and southern spur trails. The nearby North Country Trail and Boardman River provide excellent hiking and fishing opportunities. This campground has a maximum capacity of 200 people. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from a hand-pump well. There is also a submersible pump that requires a 5,000 watt generator. The campground is located adjacent to Scheck's Place State Forest Campground and 12 miles southwest of Williamsburg via Williamsburg Road, Supply Road and Brown Bridge Road. If the group will utilize multiple campgrounds along the Shore-to-Shore Trail, please contact the Cadillac Operations Service Center at 231-775-9727, ext. 6006. Fall is the sweet spot here. September brings daytime highs in the 50s and 60s°F, October cools to the 40s and 50s, and nights turn crisp. Deciduous trees peak in color, bugs drop off, and trails see lighter use than summer. Wildlife viewing picks up in early fall, and river conditions stay good for paddling and fishing through early October. Spring can flood low-lying areas during snowmelt. Summer is warm but mosquitoes are aggressive near the river.
“Fall is the sweet spot” with peak deciduous color, cooler days and fewer bugs.
Rustic trail/group camp with basic facilities: vault toilets and potable hand-pump well water; no hookups or showers. A submersible pump is available but requires a 5,000-watt generator.
