About Rapid River Trail Camp

Nestled among towering oaks and pines, Rapid River Trail Camp welcomes groups of up to 200 to its sun-dappled clearing along the legendary Shore-to-Shore Trail. This rustic equestrian haven offers the essentials—vault toilets and fresh well water from a hand pump—letting you focus on the trail ahead and the camaraderie around the campfire.
A rustic, group equestrian trail campground intended for tent/horse groups. Managed as a group use area with a maximum capacity of 200 people.
Historical SignificanceDesigned for equestrian campers on the Shore-to-Shore Trail, the campground is maintained with help from the Michigan Trail Riders Association and is managed by Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park (per the DNR listing).
Natural Features and SceneryImagine waking to sunlight filtering through a canopy of oak and pine, the Rapid River murmuring nearby as you prepare for another day in the saddle. The campground's open, airy layout provides plenty of room for horses and riders alike, while the surrounding trail system beckons with promise—like the scenic 19.2-mile stretch to Schecks Trail Camp, where sandy paths wind alongside sparkling river views. It's the kind of setting that reminds you why Michigan's Shore-to-Shore Trail has captured the hearts of horseback adventurers for generations.
