Solo tent campers or RV travelers will find no hookups, no showers, and a site designed around horse groups, the submersible pump even requires a 5,000-watt generator you'd have to haul in yourself.

This sunny, open group campground is surrounded by tall oaks and pines. It is designed for use by equestrian campers riding the Shore-to-Shore Trail , a 420-mile trail system open to hiking and horseback riding, that stretches east-west from Empire to Oscoda with two additional northern and southern spur trails. The 19.2-mile route from Rapid River Trail Camp to Schecks Trail Camp features a beautiful river and can be sandy in places. This group campground has a maximum capacity of 200 people. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from well-hand pump. There is also a submersible pump that requires a 5000 watt generator. The campground is located 3 miles north of Kalkaska via Metzgar Road. If the group will utilize multiple campgrounds along the trail, please contact the Cadillac Operations Service Center at 231-775-9727, ext. 6006. Summer brings the most reliable conditions, with daytime highs in the mid-60s to high-70s°F and cool nights in the 45–55°F range. Long daylight and dry, packed trails make this the easiest season for multi-day rides or large gatherings. The Rapid River runs at a pleasant level for wading. Expect moderate to busy use on weekends. Insects are present, so bring repellent.
