Go if

Large riding groups staging a multi-day Shore-to-Shore traverse will find this one of the few camps scaled for 200 people and horses, with water from a hand pump and a 19-mile stretch of trail to Schecks waiting at the trailhead.

Skip if

Solo tent campers or RV travelers will find no hookups, no showers, and a site designed around horse groups, the submersible pump even requires a 5,000-watt generator you'd have to haul in yourself.

Official information for Rapid River Trail Camp from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

This sunny, open group campground is surrounded by tall oaks and pines. It is designed for use by equestrian campers riding the Shore-to-Shore Trail , a 420-mile trail system open to hiking and horseback riding, that stretches east-west from Empire to Oscoda with two additional northern and southern spur trails. The 19.2-mile route from Rapid River Trail Camp to Schecks Trail Camp features a beautiful river and can be sandy in places. This group campground has a maximum capacity of 200 people. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from well-hand pump. There is also a submersible pump that requires a 5000 watt generator. The campground is located 3 miles north of Kalkaska via Metzgar Road. If the group will utilize multiple campgrounds along the trail, please contact the Cadillac Operations Service Center at 231-775-9727, ext. 6006.
