Lake Michigan's might has influenced Indiana Dunes for millennia. Wind and waves have shaped the land, leaving a rich mosaic of habitats along these 15 miles of Indiana coast. Over 50 miles of trails lead through shifting sand dunes, quiet woodlands, sunny prairies and lush wetlands. Known for its striking plant and bird diversity, it's easy to find inspiration throughout the park’s 15,000 acres.
Visitors can access the national park via Interstate 94, the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 80/90), U.S. Highway 12, U.S. Highway 20, Indiana State Road 49, and various other local roads. Best season: spring. Spring offers the best balance of mild weather, blooming dune wildflowers, and peak migratory bird activity — ideal for hiking and wildlife viewing. Expect daytime highs roughly 50–70°F (40s–low 70s°F) from April through June with cool, breezy mornings and evenings; trails are generally muddy early in the season so bring waterproof footwear. Crowds are lower than summer beach season, so you can enjoy quieter walks on the dunes and easier access to the five walk-in tent sites. Peak months: May, June, April, September Avoid: November, December, January, February
Described as best season: mild weather, blooming dune wildflowers and peak migratory birds.

The Central Avenue Walk-in Sites campground offers a basic setup designed to immerse visitors in the natural environment of Indiana Dunes National Park. Each of the five campsites includes a picnic table and a fire pit with a grill. However, there is no potable water available—campers must bring their own. Vault toilets are located near the Central Beach parking lot, which is the starting point to access the sites. The campground emphasizes a pack-in, pack-out policy, and visitors are reminded not to collect firewood from the surrounding area, but to bring their own. The campground is walk-in only, and distances to sites range from 0.1 to 0.63 miles, with uneven terrain and a large hill to navigate.
