Lower Wekiva River State Park Campground is a primitive equestrian facility exclusively for horse camping, sitting along the Wekiva River near Sorrento. Most of the sites offer river views. Horses get stalls, corrals, tether posts, and non-potable water; riders get basic restrooms and showers. Reservations fill quickly and require proof of negative Coggins.
Primitive equestrian camping is offered (primitive camping available only to those camping with horses). Tents must be pitched in designated camping areas. Recreational vehicle and trailer parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis; no cabins or group sites are described.
Weather and SeasonsSpring brings the best conditions. Daytime highs range from the mid-60s to mid-80s with lower humidity than summer, making long rides and paddling trips more comfortable. River levels are usually good for boating and fishing. Wildflowers bloom, migratory birds pass through, and bug pressure is lighter than summer, though you'll still need repellent near marshy areas. Weekends draw moderate crowds; weekdays stay quieter.
Natural Features and SceneryThe Wekiva River flows through a mix of sandhills, scrub, and hardwood hammocks. Most campsites look out over the river, where fish jump and birds work the shoreline. Big trees shade the banks. The preserve has 18 miles of multi-use trails at the north entrance and a 2.5-mile Sand Hill Nature Trail to the south. Deer and bear tracks show up on the trails. You can launch canoes or kayaks at Katie's Landing for river access. The trails often run through deep sugar sand, which reviewers say feels designed for horses rather than hikers. Some trails dead-end at high water or have poor signage.
