Chamise Flat sits on a bluff above the North Fork of the Kern River, 12 miles north of Kernville. This free dispersed camping area runs on a bring-your-own-everything model: water, firewood, toilet paper. During summer, the Forest Service adds portable toilets and trash bins, but the rest of the year you're on your own.
Dispersed (primitive) camping along a river; minimal to no developed facilities.
Weather and SeasonsBest season: summer. Summer is the best time to visit Chamise Flat because the North Fork of the Kern is at its most welcoming for swimming, tubing, rafting and riverside relaxation, and seasonal services (portable toilets and trash bins) are in place. Expect daytime temperatures typically in the mid‑80s to mid‑90s°F (29–35°C) with evenings cooling into the 50s–60s°F (10–18°C), ideal for warm‑weather camping and river recreation. Weekends and holiday weeks can be busy, so come midweek for a quieter, more remote feel
Peak months: July, August, June, September
Natural Features and SceneryThe North Fork of the Kern River runs below the camping area, accessible via a short walk down from the bluff. Trees provide shade across most of the dispersed sites, and the higher elevation setting offers river views without the tight, crowded feel of lower riverside camps. The water runs cold and fast most of the year. Good for wading near the banks or floating on warm afternoons, less so for swimming laps. Reviewers describe it as beautiful and quiet, with natural fire rings scattered among the trees.
