The elevation is 2,400 ft. The campground, attractive with spacious camp sites, is one large loop meandering along the Kern River. Gray pine provide some shade but campground is mostly open and very sunny. Because some camp sites are located well above the river and cottonwoods are dense along its banks, views of river are limited. Large boulders are scattered throughout campground. Most tent sites are walk-ins.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best balance of mild daytime temperatures (typically 65–80°F) and cool, clear nights (40s–50s), making hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing most pleasant while summer crowds thin out. River flows are usually lower and clearer than spring, improving access to swimming holes and shoreline fishing, and the canyon’s light in October delivers excellent photography and stargazing.
