Tent campers without a bombproof freestanding shelter and long stakes will regret it. Site 28 is notorious, but the wind problem isn't site-specific. Pier fishing is also off the table until storm repairs are done.
Compare with similar sites, watch availability, and build a packing list — Camp Sage handles all of it.
Summer brings the most reliable conditions. Daytime highs in the mid-60s to mid-70s, cool nights in the 50s, warmest ocean water, and full trail access to the hot springs. Mornings are often calm, good for photography and beach walks. By afternoon, onshore winds kick up and can gust past 50 mph, sandblasting tents and rattling RVs through the night. Winter sees fewer visitors but rougher weather. Check the wind forecast before you come. Bring long tent stakes, extra sleeping pad, and a sturdy shelter if you're not in an RV.
Summer offers warmest ocean, full trail access and most reliable conditions despite afternoon winds.

Gaviota Campground offers basic amenities, including restrooms, showers, and potable water availability. User reviews highlight the cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities, though some mention occasional issues such as showers out of service or toilets running out of paper. The campground has picnic tables and fire rings at each site. A small camp store operates from Friday to Monday, selling "little goodies and trinkets," but it has limited hours and stock. RV rentals can be delivered by 101 RV Rentals, the only authorized business for such services. The campground is well-maintained overall, though some users noted a lack of shade and tight campsites.
