Natural Features and SceneryThe campground sits on volcanic terrain shaped by eruptions 900 years ago. Black lava rock and cinder fields stretch between stands of Ponderosa pines. The Bonito Lava Flow forms a frozen river of stone that defines the landscape. NASA once used the area for astronaut training because the geology mimics lunar conditions. Cinder cones rise in the distance. The forest has reclaimed much of the harsh volcanic soil, creating an odd mix of moonscape and evergreen. At this elevation, wildflowers push through volcanic gravel in summer. Hawks circle overhead. The terrain is dry and rugged, with ravines cutting through hillsides.
Lodging & AccommodationsNo hotel-style lodging accommodations are available within the campground.
Programs & ActivitiesThe campground offers ranger programs and educational talks at its amphitheater. A user highlighted, "We were lucky enough to be there on the night the park ranger gave a presentation on the raven... very cool."
