A landscape is alive underneath our feet, filled with creatures that remind us what it is to be wild. Katmai was established in 1918 to protect the volcanically devastated region surrounding Novarupta and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Today, Katmai National Park and Preserve also protects 9,000 years of human history and important habitat for salmon and thousands of brown bears.
Katmai National Park & Preserve is located on the northern Alaska Peninsula, northwest of Kodiak Island and southwest of Homer, Alaska. The park’s headquarters is in King Salmon, about 290 air miles southwest of Anchorage. Unlike most national parks in the United States, Katmai is almost exclusively accessed by plane or boat.

Fure's Cabin, located in Katmai National Park & Preserve, offers a historic and remote camping experience. The cabin is equipped with a bunk bed, table, chairs, and a wood-burning stove. Guests must bring their own supplies, including bedding, food, and cooking gear. "Limited firewood is available on site," but guests are advised to gather dead/downed wood for additional campfires. A fire ring is located in front of the cabin, and one vault toilet is accessible approximately 50 yards uphill. Notably, the cabin is not a substitute for Brooks Camp Campground and requires significant planning to access, as it is over 20 miles away accessible only by water or air. User reviews emphasize the rustic nature of the cabin: "Cabin secure despite 2 broken windows with tape patching. Wood stove worked well to dry out our gear with minimum wood and banked coals overnight well." However, some amenities may be broken, as one review noted: "Lantern provided was broken. We brought our own solar lantern and flashlights."
