About This Region
Glacier National Park, often called the "Crown of the Continent," offers some of the most spectacular camping experiences in North America. Spanning over one million acres of pristine wilderness in northwestern Montana, the park features dramatic mountain peaks, ancient glaciers, crystal-clear lakes, and dense forests that create an unforgettable backdrop for outdoor adventures. The park operates eight developed campgrounds within its boundaries, each offering unique access to Glacier's diverse landscapes. From the iconic Many Glacier Valley with its towering peaks and accessible glaciers to the serene shores of Lake McDonald at Apgar, campers can choose experiences ranging from front-country convenience to more secluded wilderness immersion. Beyond the park boundaries, the surrounding Flathead and Kootenai National Forests provide additional camping options that serve as excellent base camps for Glacier exploration. These forest campgrounds often have greater availability during peak season and offer their own stunning mountain and lake scenery, making them ideal alternatives when park campgrounds fill up.
Camping in Glacier National Park means waking up to some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the Lower 48. Expect crisp mountain air, wildlife sightings including bears and mountain goats, and access to over 700 miles of trails. The park's campgrounds range from large, popular sites like Fish Creek with over 170 sites to intimate tent-only areas like Sprague Creek with just 25 sites. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from late May through mid-September, with Apgar offering extended fall camping. Facilities typically include flush toilets, potable water, and bear-proof food storage. Some campgrounds offer evening ranger programs and are conveniently located near shuttle stops for car-free exploration of Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Best Time to Visit
The prime camping season runs from mid-June through early September, when Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open and all park services are operational. July and August see the warmest weather but also the highest crowds and most competitive campsite reservations. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, target late June or early September. Wildflowers peak in July, while fall colors emerge in late September. Many Glacier and Two Medicine areas often retain snow into early July, so check conditions before planning hikes to higher elevations.
