Beautiful lake in rugged terrain with visitor center overlooking the lake and many recreational opportunities.
The dam is on the Guyandotte River near the southern West Virginia town of Justice. From Justice, which is in Mingo County, take US Route 52 south. On US Route 52 south, after leaving Mingo County and crossing the Guyandotte River into Wyoming County, approximately one-tenth of a mile on the left is the turn off to the Visitor Center access road.

Best season: summer. Summer is the best time to visit because Guyandotte Campground is fully open and R.D. Bailey Lake is at its recreational peak — perfect for swimming, boating, and shoreline fishing. Expect warm, humid days with highs commonly in the mid-70s to mid-80s°F (occasionally near 90°F) and nights in the mid-50s to mid-60s°F; afternoon pop-up showers are possible. Facilities (showers, playgrounds, boat launch) are available but weekends and summer holidays are busy, so reserve early.
