About Chinquapin Group Campground

Nestled in the heart of the Siskiyou National Forest, Chinquapin Group Campground offers a spacious meadow setting perfect for bringing people together—whether for family reunions, youth group adventures, or outdoor education programs. This historic site, once home to a bustling CCC camp, now provides modern group camping amenities including water, picnic tables, fire rings at three convenient locations, and restrooms, all surrounded by the natural beauty that makes southern Oregon unforgettable.
Chinquapin is a group campground situated on a large meadow at the former CCC camp site and is used for reunions, church camps, school field trips and scouting events. It is adjacent to historic structures and interpretive resources.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time at a site where history lives and breathes. From 1933 to 1941, Camp Oregon Caves hummed with the activity of Civilian Conservation Corps workers who shaped this landscape and built the stunning Grayback Ranger Station that still stands watch over the campground today. These dedicated crews constructed the station around 1936, and their legacy remains visible in the craftsmanship of this historic building. Adding to the site's significance, a magnificent Port-Orford cedar near the entrance was honored in 2011 as Oregon's 56th State Heritage Tree, connecting visitors to both human and natural history spanning generations.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground's expansive meadow serves as your basecamp for exploring a diverse tapestry of ecosystems. Grayback Creek murmurs along the property's edge, its banks lined with trails that wind through marshlands where spring wildflowers paint the landscape in brilliant colors. Wildlife frequent the area, and depending on the season, you might find yourself picking wild berries or spotting deer in the early morning mist. The towering Port-Orford cedar—Oregon's 56th State Heritage Tree—stands as a majestic sentinel near the parking area, its massive trunk and sweeping branches offering a glimpse of the ancient forests that once blanketed these mountains.
