You want a quiet, self-sufficient riverside camp in the national forest and can pack in all your water.

Best season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable weather and easiest access — expect warm, mostly dry days (typically mid 60s to mid 80s°F / ~18–30°C) and cool nights (40s–50s°F / ~5–12°C). Trails are driest and river access is at its most pleasant, making hiking, riverside picnics, and short swims or wading safest and most enjoyable. Crowds are modest because River Bench has only eight walk-in sites, but be aware late summer can bring elevated wildfire risk and occasional restrictions on campfires. Peak months: July, August, June, September Avoid: December, January, February
Summer gives most reliable conditions and easiest access per seasonal info.
The River Bench Campground features several walk-in campsites located along the Illinois River, situated on a lower river terrace in a forested environment. "Facilities include 8 walk-in campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. There is a vault toilet within walking distance. However, the campground lacks drinking water and garbage disposal facilities, so visitors are required to pack out their trash."
