Best season: fall. Early fall delivers the clearest benefits: crisp, cool days (typically highs in the mid-50s to low 60s °F, nights dropping into the 30s–40s) and vivid early leaf color along the ridgelines around Watauga Lake, perfect for hiking, photography, and peaceful boating. Water remains calm for late-season fishing and boating, and wildlife viewing is excellent as animals become more active before winter — expect moderate crowds that peak on fall weekends. Note the campground closes mid-October (Oct 13), Peak months: September, October, June, July Avoid: November, December, January, February
Noted as the best season: crisp early-fall days, vivid leaf color and quieter conditions.
