Named for Col. Auguste P. Chouteau, whose father built a shipyard on the river bank to build keelboats for the fur trade.
Directions to Afton Landing: From Muskogee, Travel north on US-69 toward Wagoner for approximately 13 miles. Turn right on OK-51 W and travel west for approximately 5 miles. Turn left on E. 731 Road and travel west for approximately .3 mile. Turn left on S. 221 Rd. and travel south for .5 mile to park entrance.

Spring offers mild, comfortable weather (daytime highs typically 60–75°F, nights in the 40s–50s) and the oxbow comes alive with migrating birds, fresh foliage, and spawning fish — making it ideal for fishing, wildlife viewing, and paddling. Bass and crappie fishing are often at their best in April–May, and the calm backwater is perfect for quiet boat trips and photography. Afton Landing provides a variety of amenities catering to campers and visitors year-round. The campground features two camping loops with a total of 19 campsites equipped with electric hookups and 3 non-electric campsites. Additionally, a popular group day-use shelter is available. Key amenities include vault toilets, potable drinking water, a dump station, a playground, a boat ramp, and a courtesy dock. Sites also have picnic tables, and fire rings provided. The campground's natural surroundings of mixed hardwood forests provide shaded areas for most campsites. Notably, the sloping high banks offer picturesque water views and allow for boats to be tied at the water's edge. Visitors can enjoy proximity to the Verdigris River and can partake in activities such as fishing, boating, and kayaking.
