Fort Gibson Lake is located on the Grand (Neosho) River about 5 miles northwest of historic Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, from which it draws its name. It is about 7.7 miles above the confluence of the Grand (Neosho) and Arkansas Rivers. The lake lies in Wagoner, Cherokee, and Mayes Counties and extends upriver to the Markham Ferry Dam (Lake Hudson). Northeast Oklahoma has long been noted for its outstanding fishing. At Fort Gibson Lake, sportsmen will find black bass, white bass, crappie, and several varieties of catfish and panfish. Three heated fishing docks offer winter fun for crappie fishing. When "game fever" is in the air, hunters will find such species as whitetail deer, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, duck, geese, cottontail rabbit and squirrel.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of mild weather, peak hardwood color, and top-notch fishing: daytime highs typically range from the mid-50s to mid-70s°F with crisp nights in the 40s–50s°F. The hardwood ridges around Fort Gibson Lake come alive with reds, golds, and oranges in mid-to-late October, making shoreline hikes and photography especially rewarding, while cooler water temperatures often concentrate fish activity for anglers. Crowd levels drop off from summer peak—weekdays and non-holiday Peak months: October, September, April, May Avoid: November, December, January, February
Open March onward; boating, fishing and milder weather make spring favorable.

Wildwood Campground, located at Fort Gibson Lake, offers a range of amenities for campers. The campsites are well-laid out and provide ample space for camping equipment. "Most of the campsites back up to the water’s edge and offer easy access to moor boats overnight." The park features a boat ramp and courtesy dock, along with recreational facilities such as a playground, horseshoe pit, and grass volleyball court. Drinking water is available on-site, and the campground includes fire pits, picnic tables, and electricity hookups at specific campsites. However, many reviews lament the removal of water hookups at each campsite, a change that many found inconvenient. For example, one reviewer stated: "The Corp of engineers decided to take all the water out from the campsites and only have one central location to fill your camper's holding tanks." Other campers appreciated the cleanliness and care of the facilities, with one review noting "the restrooms were extremely clean and warm for the cool weather."
