Coin-operated showers (quarters required, not advertised upfront), sulfur-smelling water, and poorly grounded power pedestals have annoyed more than a few reviewers. Supplies and emergency services are both 10-plus miles out.
Compare with similar sites, watch availability, and build a packing list — Camp Sage handles all of it.
Fall is the best time to visit. Daytime highs run 50s–70s°F (dropping by late October), with nights in the 30s–40s°F. The prairie grasses turn gold, skies clear, and bugs thin out. Crowds stay light to moderate, though weekends pick up. Summer brings warm, dry days good for trail exploration. Winter gets cold enough to require serious preparation, but some visitors enjoy the stark prairie landscape. Spring and fall offer mild temperatures, though prairie storms can blow through with little warning.
Fall cited as best: golden grasses, clear skies, fewer bugs and ideal temps.

The Rock Creek Station SHP campground offers a range of amenities catering to a mix of primitive and modern camping needs. "The bathrooms are top notch and the showers were very nice to have," according to a user review by Emily Shockley. Facilities include modern shower/latrine buildings, potable water, picnic tables, fire rings, and a dump station. Accessibility features for campers with disabilities and marked trails for horses are also available. The campground is noted to be "clean and beautiful" and has a dump station for RV campers. Showers are present but require quarters, which some users found inconvenient.
