Paddlers running a multi-day Au Sable float or anglers chasing brown and rainbow trout will find direct river access, wooded sites, fire rings, and a water pump covering the basics. Midweek summer visits avoid the Grayling-area weekend crowd.
No showers, no electric, no hookups, and a 15-mile supply run to Grayling. The $160 fee structure suggests a group or canoe-camp booking rather than a single-night solo site, so confirm what you're actually reserving before showing up.
Official information for Rainbow Bend State Forest Campground And Canoe Camp from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Tentrr, a venture-backed camping and outdoor startup, has installed fully equipped, hike-in campsites at Sleeper State Park (Huron County). Some sites are positioned in a more private and wooded area and others are at the top of the forested dune overlooking Lake Huron (just steps from the shoreline) and require a short hike from the parking area. There is one accessible site with a parking spot.
Each hike-in site includes a spacious, safari-style, canvas-walled tent atop a raised platform. The sites are outfitted with a queen-size memory foam mattress on a sturdy bed frame, Adirondack chairs, a fire pit, a grill and a picnic table with a storage cabinet. Access to a bathroom building (toilets and sinks) and vault toilets are within walking distance of all sites. In addition, there is a shared water spigot located at the wooded and beach locations. Campers also have acccess to a shower building in the modern campground, just a short drive away.
The sites can sleep up to six (two occupants in the main safari-style tent and four occupants in a provided pop-up tent). Bedding is not provided.
There is no electrical, so please bring your own lanterns or flashlights.
Reservations now open (click on the lodging tab and then TentRR Safari Tent radio button). The sites start at $160 per night, and a portion of the sales goes back to the DNR.

Summer delivers the best paddling and fishing conditions. Daytime highs reach the mid-70s to low-80s°F, and the Au Sable runs lower and clearer than during spring runoff, which helps both anglers wading and boaters scouting runs. Nights drop into the 50s and 60s°F. Long daylight hours support multi-day float trips. Expect weekend crowds from Grayling-area paddlers; midweek feels quieter. Holiday weekends can fill the limited sites quickly.
Summer best for paddling and fishing; temps mid-70s to low-80s and low clear flows.
Rustic, riverside campground on the Au Sable River with vault toilets, an on-site water pump, fire rings and picnic tables. No electricity, no showers and no RV hookups; first-come, first-served operation.
