Hog Island Point sits on Lake Michigan's north shore about seven miles from Naubinway, offering 42 primitive, first-come-first-served sites in a wooded setting with direct water access. The campground trades modern amenities for quiet and scenery. Vault toilets, fire rings, and potable water are all you'll find. Managed by Straits State Park.
A rustic, first‑come‑first‑served state forest campground offering tent and RV sites directly on Lake Michigan; no utility hookups are provided.
Weather and SeasonsSummer delivers the best conditions: daytime highs in the mid-60s to mid-70s°F, cool nights in the 40s–50s°F, and long daylight for fishing, paddling, and beach time. Lake Michigan is warmest and calmest for swimming then. Weekends in July and early August see the most traffic, but sites still feel uncrowded. Bring layers. Lake breezes and weather shifts are common. Mosquitoes and biting insects can be intense; pack repellent and headnets. The campground is technically open year-round, but roads and sites aren't plowed in winter.
Natural Features and SceneryMixed forest wraps the campground in shade and spacing between sites. The shoreline is mostly rocky cobblestone. Good for beachcombing and sunset views, less comfortable for barefoot walking. A sandy day-use beach on the east side handles swimming and easier lake access. At 600 feet elevation, the campground sits just above the water with long views across Lake Michigan.
Geological RegionLake Michigan shoreline, Upper Peninsula of Michigan (mixed forest setting).
Scenic ViewsMany sites offer partial or full views of Lake Michigan; lakefront or lake‑view sites on the lake side of the loop provide the best water access and scenery.
